We built this one from scratch.

In April 2011 Renkara shipped a phrase-based language reference app for the iPad. Apple selected it as iPad App of the Week, globally. It was, by the standards of the time, a good app: a large body of carefully licensed phrases, organized into categories, searchable, with audio.

It was also a book on a screen. You still had to know which category your problem lived in, and you still had to find the phrase yourself. When the licensing arrangement ran its course, the app went away, and the name went quiet.

What changed in the fifteen years since is not the phrasebook. It is that a piece of software can now understand a sentence you type in your own words and work out what you are actually trying to say. That is the whole reason to build this again — and it is why the new app shares nothing with the old one but the name and the intent.

So iPhraseBook AI starts from the situation instead of the index. You describe where you are and what you need; it gives you the phrase. Every language is included in one subscription, because splitting a travel app into purchasable language packs was always a pricing decision rather than a product one, and we are not carrying that forward either.
